Archival Museum Mats
Our Archival Museum Mats come in a precut format with outer measurements fitting popular sizes of readymade frames. Their windows mirror the most-used paper sizes, cut ½" smaller to provide a generous ¼" overlap on all sides. Working with pre-cut mats allows you to plan the dimensions of your art in advance so that it can be easily matted in this convenient and well-priced alternative to custom-cut matting.
Made using 100% cotton fibre Peterboro Museum matboards, this classic white mat has a solid colour throughout their traditional 4-ply construction for a unified and clean presentation. Calcium carbonate buffered, they are naturally acid- and lignin-free, and adhere to both FACTS and the Fine Art Trade Guild's stringent specifications for museum matboards.
To ensure you work is surrounded by archival material, each package comes as a set that includes a museum quality front mat and back mat, plus acid-free adhesive tape for hinging the front mat to the back. Packaged in a reusable glassine bag to easily display matted artwork for sale or store the mats while helping to keep them in top condition.
Ideal for long-term display of one-of-a-kind, precious, or irreplaceable artworks or photographs, and available in white in 5 standard sizes.
* Note that pre-cut mat windows are cut smaller than the paper size they are designed for. As an example, an Archival Museum Mat with an 13" x 19" window measures 12 ½" x 18 ½" at its opening. This offers a ¼" overlap on all sides of the window to hold the work in place while covering as little of it as possible. With this in mind, printing your work edge-to-edge is ideal if you don't wish to see the print border inside the mat.
Why choose archival quality matting? While modern manufacturing techniques have allowed for the purifying of wood fibers into alpha cellulose (the highest form of fiber purity), matboards made of cotton still remain the top choice for fine art framers. Fine art prints on cotton papers have remained vibrant and intact for centuries, proving cotton's benefits. For this reason, many museums and framers feel that cotton is not only a time-honored tradition, but provides the assurance that matted artwork will be preserved for future generations
