Balsa & Basswood
Balsa and Basswood, because of their light weight to strength ratio, are useful for model making or carving.
Balsa is used in all sorts of model building, where it is important to use a strong, light wood. Easily cut and shaped with hand tools such as utility knives and sanding blocks, it is useful in the classroom, studio, or office. Balsa is a nondescript wood with little grain pattern and limited amounts of lignin.
Basswood, slightly heavier than balsa, is also used in model-making. Thinner pieces can be bent easily, and it is a stable wood that is easy to carve and sculpt. Basswood is also hypoallergenic and resists splitting. A very soft wood, basswood may be dented or scratched from hard use.
